FIMI Automation renews the electrical and automation architecture of CLN FIMI line 438, preserving its production function and long-term value.

 

The successful completion of the FAT concludes a project combining electrical revamping, L1 software, HMI, data connectivity and a mechanical overhaul.

A line in operation since 1991

Installed in 1991, the Cut-to-Length line supplied by FIMI to CLN had retained its production function over time. The evolution of control technology and the growing difficulty of sourcing some electrical components, however, made a targeted intervention necessary.

The project was conceived to give operational continuity to equipment that still had value, updating obsolete elements without changing its fundamental production function.

Electrical revamping and Level 1 automation

The work included the complete renewal of the electrical cabinets and Level 1 automation software, together with a mechanical overhaul of the line. The new architecture uses current components and solutions while retaining the equipment’s original functions.

The update reduces the risks associated with unsupported technology and makes future maintenance activities easier to manage, supporting the line’s technical sustainability over its renewed operating life.

From analogue controls to a digital HMI

The former analogue controls have been replaced with a modern digital HMI. Operational information and commands are now brought together in a single environment, giving the operator a clearer view of line status and a more orderly way to manage day-to-day activities.

Connected to the customer’s corporate network

The revamping also included connection to the customer’s corporate network for receiving and transmitting production data and supporting reporting activities. FIMI Automation enabled the connection and data availability; the software for managing that data was developed by the customer as part of its Industry 4.0 programme.

From order to FAT

The project was completed in approximately ten months from order to FAT. Installation and commissioning took a total of four non-consecutive months and were completed ahead of the planned schedule.

The positive outcome of the Final Acceptance Test, formally approved by the customer, confirms that the agreed objectives were achieved.
